David's Drawings by Cathryn Falwell

I like this book for it's organization.
1. David saw beauty
2. David had the confidence to draw tree
3. Class helped add to the picture
4. David went home and drew again
5.  Sister told him to hang it on the wall

Idea: __________'s Drawings
Students make their own book about their own drawing/s.  Draw a simple item.  Add other items. Draw simple item again.
I especially like how this story helps students see the world with an artistic eye.

Frog Goes to Dinner by Mercer Mayer

I know it seems obvious, but with picture books have the students tell the story to work on retelling.  But it isn't REALLY retelling, it is just telling.

Ideas: What would happen if you took a pet to _______ (insert place)?
Drawing: Backgrounds and facial expressions

Tuesday by David Wiesner

Kids will really have to study these pictures to figure out what is going on.

Ideas: What do you see on the frogs' faces?
Can you draw the same animal/person with different feelings on his/her face?
Predicting: What will happen next?

Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann

A mischievous monkey lets all the animals out of their cages and they all follow the zookeeper home.

Ideas: Study the details in these pictures.
How do the pictures tell the story?

Three ways to read a book: Reading the pictures

Good Dog, Carl by Alexandra Day

Inferring: "What happened BETWEEN these two pages?"
Ideas: What might happen with your pet when you are gone?

Flotsam by David Wiesner

flot·sam
ˈflätsəm/
noun
  1. the wreckage of a ship or its cargo found floating on or washed up by the sea.

    Front flap: Something that floats.
If it floats in the ocean,
it may wash up on the beach,

    where someone may find it
    and be astonished
    and share the discovery
    with someone else---

    as David Wiesner
    shares it
    with you.

Oh, wow!  I love this book!  I have seen this book many times, but never took the time to read the whole thing.  What the boy finds when he develops the film in a camera he finds is truly magical.

SO much to work with in this book!  I see great discussions ahead of me.

The Museum Trip by Barbara Lehman

Front flap: Museums: filled with mysterious, magical art and curiosities?  Or secrets?  And what might happen if a boy suddenly became part of one of the mind-bending exhibits?

Ideas: List 10 places that you have been
Write captions for some of the pages

Eyewitness Books Train

This book is mostly too dense, but it has a great cut away of a steam engine.
